from a page on Barbersville IN:
Other merchants included Charles Schnitger, who received a grocery store license in 1846, and who served as Barbersville postmaster from November 18, 1852 to April 13, 1854, and again from December 11, 1854 to July 17, 1857. Robert G. Benefiel, Barbersville postmaster from April 13, 1853 until December 11, 1854, is also listed in the 1860 census as a merchant. Schnitger would soon move to Canaan where he is buried.

from this page , citing "Wills and Administrations of Jefferson County, Indiana", transcribed by Miss Mary Hill in April 1945; and "Wills of Jefferson County, Indiana 1854-1883", no date or author :

Schnitzer, Charles. (Book A-364) Will Wr. 30 Jan. 1863. Rec. 25 Feb. 1863.
Charles T. Schnitzer, son; dau. Emily Jane Whitham, wife of George Whitham; dau. Cynthia Ann McCoskey, wife of Jeremiah McCoskey. Gamaliel T. Warfield and Wesley McCoy, execs.

(Gamaliel Warfield was Charles' wife's cousin. See her notes for information.)

Another researcher found his naturalization papers. They say he left Bremen in Prussia on 1834-04-03 and arrived in Baltimore on 1834-06-06. He was naturalized 1840-08-10.

--
There was an Ernst Schnitger age 25 who arrived in Baltimore in 1834 on the ship Sophie from Bremen. His place of origin was Naenden. He was a baker.

There doesn't appear to be a Naenden in Germany. There's a Menden in North Rhine-Westphalia in the district Maerkischer Kreis.

I found this Charles listed in an odd tree at Ancestry.com. Charles' parents are given as (unknown) Schnitger + (unknown). What is odd is that the unknown father has vital info (b 1780 GER d 1858-08-06 Nordhein-Westaflen GER), a second wife Henrietta Sophie Goekes and 4 children, and parents (Johann Hermann Schnitger 1751-12-01 Borgholzhausen, Gutersloh GER d 1828-03-04 Rodinghausen, Herford GER + Dorathea Henriette Krohnen 1754 Winterachen GER d 1813-12-10 Rodinghausen). I don't see how all that could be known without the father's name.

--
I found the above mystery man in the tree at FamilySearch.org. He is Carl Gustaph Friedrich Schnitger. He is shown married 1830-12-22 to Anna Maria Ilsabein Wleke in Roedinghausen, Westfalen. Surely Anna is a second wife.

--
According to Ancestry.com's ThruLines, Sophia's husband was Friedrich Wilhelm Schnitker 1793-03-03 Schwendorf bap 1793-03-07 Roedinghausen (Herford), Westfalen, Prussia d 1858-08-06 Roedinghausen. I don't match anyone descended from another child of this couple.
There is an 1814-12-24 marriage record for this Friedrich to Clare Eliesabeth Moenters, but no marriage record (so far) for him and Sophia.
Unless my Charles was born more like 1817, Friedrich can't be his father.

There was a Johann Carl August Schnitger born 1809-12-23 Lemgo, Lippe GER to Christian August Schnitger and Sophie Florentine Amalie Schnitger. He was baptized 1810-01-10.
Note that this Charles named a son Florin.

Christian and Sophie married in Evangelisch, Bega, Lippe, GER on 1803-03-29.
There was also a Christian August Schnitger who married in St Nicolai Evangelisch, Lemgo, Lippe GER on 1790-05-11 to Anna Henriette Wolfs.

There was also a Friedrich Schnitger born c1820 in Lippe. He arrived in Baltimore in 1853 and moved to Indianapolis.

Christian August Schnitger and Anna Henriette Wolff had a son Friedrich August Schnitger who married in St Nicolai on 1843-06-11 Emilie Karoline Junker d/o Johann Conrad Junker + Justine Louise Doht.
In St Nicolai on 1839-07-09 Johann Carl August Schitger married Friedricke Dorothee Lindemann. If that's the one born in 1809, he can't be my Charles.

He is a merchant. His real estate is valued at $300, and his personal estate at $1000. He and his wife can read and write.

I can't find him on the 1840 census, but he really should be in Jefferson Co IN. They may be living
with someone else and not enumerated separately.
There is a "C Shnider" in Jefferson Co, but he is most likely the Casper Schneider also there in 1850.
There are two Warfield families in the county, but neither listing could contain Charles and his wife.
