He was the first General Recorder for the RI state assembly. He argued a lot with Governor Coddington.
In 1650 he was made General Attorney for the colony.

The action uppon the case comenced by Mr Dyre pla
against Wm Coddington Esqr: uppon damage of L500 the
case hath beene much debated & the result of the Court is
that they have taken full cognisence of the matter & if it
shall be proceeded in yett uppon consideration 5 men tht is
Mr Samuell Gorton Mr John Smith Mr John Easton mM John
Greene Junr Mr Wm Baulston are desired to see if they can
compass the matter wch they have done.

The opinion of the Court is that the three ishues spetified
in Mr Will Dyres declaration against Mr Will: Coddington
Trustee and John Greene Trustee and Treasurer for the
towne of Newport, are thre distinct actions.
An action of Trespas upon the case comenced by Mr Will
Dyre pla against William Coddington Trustee for the towne
of Newport and John Greene Trustee and Treasurer for the
towne of Newport deffendt damidge two hundred pownds
starll
The jurris verdit is wee find for the deffendt & allow him
cost of court
Whereas My Dyre refused to putt his causes to Tryall
becaues he could not have leagall proceedings in his highnes
name. The president publiquly in his highnes name desired
Mr Will Dyre to give in his reasons to the Court in writinge
to which he replied they should have it in print.

The plaintif refuseing to putt this case to tryall, the
deffendt by the Courts order enters a non sute in Court.

William Dyre of Newport Senr doth in this present Court
acknowlidge him Selfe indebted in the sum of twenty pownds
starll to his highnes the lord protector of the Comon welth of
England &cr and that his sones Samuell Dyre and Mehor-
shalelhasbaz Dyre shall macke their personal apeareances at
the next Genrl Court of Tryalls to be held at portsmouth, the
second Tuseday in October next there to answer to what
shall be aledged against them, whereupon the act of the last
Court of Tryalls is null and exicution is to be stopt and they
apearinge this bond is voyd, but otherwise to stand in full
Force

An action of the case for accompts and debt concerninge
the states parte of prices comenced by the Genrl Aturny
Mr John Greene in behalfe of the collony plaintiff against
Nicholas Easton and William Dyre defendts
The case demurd by the pla to the Genrl Court in march
next, by vertue of the Genrl Court of Comissioners order only
with respect to Nicholas Easton, ordered that the tryall of
the case be referred till tomorrow morneinge to see if pos-
sible the Genrl Treasurer and Genrl Aturny can receive satis-
faction from William Dyre concerninge the accompt of the
states parte which the sayd Dyre tenders in the Court, and
if he doe not give them satisfacdtion then the case to proceed
to tryall.
The genrl ishue nott guilty.
On this case the jurry haveinge beine longe upon it and
they not agreeinge to any other but a spetiall verditt, the
Court doe therefore by the consent both of plaintiff and
defendant Will Dyre referr the whole matter with respect to
William Dyre as brought to this Court unto the next Court
of Comissioners, and that the sayd William Dyres bonds
doe stand good to ingadge him to answer the sayd matter at
the sayd Court of Comissioners.

Upon an indictment by Mr William Dyre against Mr Wil-
liam Coddington for utteringe words of contumacie &c. The
sayd Mr Coddington enters his traverse, and pleads not guilty
and refers him selfe to the cuntry for tryall.
The jurrys verdict not guilty of the charge.
The Governer decents from the verdict.

I doe affirme that wee the purchassers of Rhod-Island (my selfe
being the cheife) William Dyre desireinge a spott of land of
us as we passed by it, after wee had purchassed the sayd
island; did grant him our right in the sayd island and named
it Dyres Island. Wittnes my hand 1669-10-18.

That I William Dyre of Newport
on Rhod-Island in the Collony of Rhod-Island and providence
plantacons in New England Gent, Have and by these pressents
doe fully freely absolutly give grant enfeof and establish to my
well beloved sonn William Dyre all that my island comonly
called Dyres Island lyinge and being sittuated in the Narro-
gansett Bay upon the northern side of Rhod-Island over against
prudence Island for him the sayd William Dyre and his heires
forever to poses hould and injoy together with all the imuneties
previleges or prerogatives of land as well upland as marsh or
meddowes upon the sayd island with the waters therin or
therto apertaininge. In confirmation of this free gift grant
and indefeassable title I the sayd William ffirst above-sayd
have sett to my hand and selae this pressent fifth day of
August in the yeare one Thowsand Six hun-
dred and Seventy and in the Two and Twentith yeare of his
Majtes raigne Charles the Second.
