[1719-03-05 letter from Alexander Spotswood to Lords Commissioners of Trade and Plantations]
My Lords
The earnest desire I have to promote His Majestys service and
the quiet of this Colony, too long obstructed by the Factions conduct
of a prevailing party, occasions my troubling your Lord'ps thus early
with an account of the death of Collo Smith one of his Majestys
Council here, but a strenuous adherent of that Faction I have been
complaining of; and lest the unwearied endeavours of the same sett
of men to pursue their private designs, should so far prevail, as to
gett one of their own family and principals recommended to Yo'r Lord-
ships, or without your participation to His Majesty, for supplying
this vaccancy, I take this opportunity to recommend to the honour of
that post one of better principals and character, believing Your
Lordships will always regard in such nominations men of distinguished
loyalty, sound principals, good sense and peaceable dispositions
joined with the advantages of a plentifull fortune; and as such I
humbly offer to Your Lordships favour Mr John Robinson, a Gentleman
who has without dispute all the qualifications afore-mentioned, and
on that account meriting His Majesty's favour, but this I do upon the
supposition that both Mr Digges and Mr Beverley are already con-
stituted of that board the one in the room of Mr Berkeley, and the
other in that of Mr Byrd, according to your Lordships former
recommendation.
