Notes:

I'm not positive Eugene was her first husband, but he was in the right location and vanishes between the 1880 and 1900 censuses. He's a little young to be Clara's father, but the only other Palmer family in Douglas Co MO lived in a different township. Eugene's mother was an Ellison, and Cynthia's mother's family interacted with the Ellison family quite a bit.
The other family was Howard Palmer of TN, with wife Elizabeth. That couple currently isn't in the FamilySearch tree, or in any member tree at Ancestry.com or RootsWeb.
