Information extracted from "Scotch-Irish in Ireland and in America: as shown in sketches of the pioneer
Scotch-Irish families McCormick, Stevenson, McKenzie, and Bell, in North Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri,
and Texas" by Andrew Phelps McCormick (a privately printed book):

John Adams was born in the Republic of Holland about 1700, and came to America in the first year of
his mature manhood.
He had a sister Catherine. His father died before before he emigrated. His widow mother had a small
farm on which she grew grapes and flax. The farm was about 40 miles from a large seaport.
John was forced into army service, but escaped back to his mother's cottage during the winter. The
following spring he fled to the seaport and left for America, narrowly escaping the army.
He arrived in New Jersey on the Delaware River, where his sister later joined him.
His wife was also Dutch. They had children John, Peter, Jacob, Mary, Hannah, and Catherine.
In the 1770s John was an ardent supporter of American independence.
In 1776, following Lord Cornwallis' invasion of NJ, John moved to PA. (He possibly first moved to VA
for about a year.) He then moved to Rowan Co NC late 1777/early 1778.
Daughter Catherine married Andrew McCormick, ancestor of the author. Daughter Hannah married a
man named Lowrance. Daughter Mary married a man named Groves.
On 1782-11-10 Andrew McCormick bought of John Lowrance and Abraham Lowrance, executors of
the Will of Joseph Lowrance, 303 acres of land on Lyles Creek, in Lincoln Co NC, which land was
granted to Joseph by Earl Granville on 1762-08-28.
John lived until 1801, spending his final years living with daughter Catherine McCormick.

There was a John Adams age 20 who arrived in 1720 in PA, VA, or MD. See "The Complete Book of
Emigrants: A Comprehensive Listing Compiled from English Public Records of Those Who Took Ship to
the Americas for Political, Religious, and Economic Reasons; of Those Who Were Deported for
Vagrancy; and of Those Who Were Sold to Labour in the New Colonies" by Peter Coldham Wilson, p245.

There was a John Adams (same as above?) age 20 who arrived 1719 in PA, VA, or MD. See "A List
of Emigrants from Englad to America 1718-1759" by Jack Kaminkow and Marion Kaminkow, p1.

A message on the Adams genforum says daughter Mary's husband was Abraham Groves, and that they
married in Rowan Co NC 1779. Abraham lived in Iredell Co on the county line, with John Adams and
John Lowrance on the Rowan Co side.
Abraham's family later moved to Hickman TN.
