He came to America in 1640. He was a Captain, commissioner, and deputy from Weymouth to the General Court from 1642 to 1645, 1679, and 1683. For many years he was clerk of the House of Deputies in the General Court. (citing Water's Gleanings in England pp498 and 549)
He married (1) 1629-03-17 Agnes Combe d/o Joseph Combe.
He married (2) near 1630 Jane Haviland d/o Matthew Haviland.
He married a third wife and settled at Weymouth.

we find but little recorded until a town meeting held 1641-12-07...We
would here note that the townsmen seem to have been a board
somewhat similar to our selectmen, and at that time were Edward
Bates, Thomas Richards, William Torrey, John Harding, and
John Upham.
