One RootsWeb entry says his father was Augustine Smith c1700 VA.
Some trees at Ancestry.com say his parents were John Smith 1695 Richmond VA d 1740 Richmond + Mary Colston 1700 Halifax VA d 1755 VA. John and Mary seem to have lived in Richmond their whole lives, but Edward was born in Albemarle Co.
