The Kingsport Times (Kingsport, Tennessee)

1925-12-02
William M Rigsby, aged 42 years, was instantly killed about 1.30 oclock
this afternoon, when he fell through a tin roof in the boiler room of the
old Federal Dye Plant here.
Rigsby, who was an employee of the plant, was working on the roof, when
suddenly it broke through, causing him to fall a distance of about 30
feet, landing on a steel rod, projecting from an old boiler. The piece of
metal partially impaled Rigsby's body in the region of the heart. The skull
was fractured at the base, both legs were broken, the right below the knee,
and the left in the thigh, and the right side was fractured.
Dismantling of machinery and other work was in progress at the plant at
the time of the accident. Earlier in the day, another mishap occurred at
the place, when Frederic Newell, superintendent of the Morse Dismantling
Company, sustained a crushed foot, which necessitated amputation of one
side of the member later at the River View Hospital.
Rigsby's home is near Fordtown TN. He is survived by a wife and ten
children. Efforts were being made this afternoon to notify the dead man's
family of the accident. The body was taken to a local undertaking
establishment to be prepared for burial. Funeral arrangements will be
announced later, but it has definitely been decided to take the body to
Rigsby's home.
Mr Rigsby had been employed at the Federal plant for about seven months.
He was considered one of the best workers at the place, and was well
liked by his fellow employees. He received a slight injury while at work
at the plant on October 22 but had fully recovered.
