Everybody says his middle name was Meely, but that is a mistake from the 1880 census, where his wife is head-of-household and is listed as Meely.

I think he served in the Civil War (Union), 3 TN infantry, Co I.
There was a James M Rigsby in that company. This is the only James M from TN that I know of.
But there was also a James Rigsby in 16th TN infantry, Co A (Confederate). That company was recruited from DeKalb Co, and this was the only James Rigsby in DeKalb at the time.
