His father served in the Confederacy but was sent home because of his age. On the way home he was
captured by southern soldiers who believed he was a spy for the north and were going to hang him. Col
Jabez Smith rode up in the nick of time and shouted "Wait! I know that man!". William was so grateful
that he named his next son after Col Smith.
