He served in the Civil War (Confederate).
First he enlisted 1861-09-26 in 1st Brigade GA State Troops, and mustered out 1862-05-05.
He then enlisted 1862-05-05 in 55th GA infantry, Co G.
He was captured at Cumberland Gap on 1863-09-09, and finally released on 1865-06-15.

This Indenture made this the 28th day of October 1871 between L J
Rigsby & Lewis Clay of the County aforesaid of the first part and
R E Whigham of the County aforesaid of the second part Witnesseth
that the said L J Rigsby & Lewis Clay for in consideration of the
sum of fifteen hundred Dollars to him paid in hand by the said
R E Whigham the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged does by
these presents give grant bargain sell convey unto the said R E
Whigham his heirs assigns a certain lot of land lying in the
County of Decatur State of Georgia Known distinguished in the plan
of said County as lot number two hundred twelve in the 16th dis
trict of said County Together with all the privileges thereto in any
wise appertaining To have to hold the above granted premises
to the said R E Whigham his heirs assigns in fee simple And the
said L J Rigsby & Lewis Clay will their heirs executors administra
tors shall the said property to the said R E Whigham his heirs ex
ecutors administrators forever warrant defend against the law
ful demands of all persons whatever In testimony whereof
the said L J Rigsby & Lewis Clay has hereto set their hands seals
