Even though Thomas isn't named in Richard's will, there's significant circumstantial evidence Richard was his father, and no evidence for any other Hopson in the area. David A Harris has written up a very good analysis. Contact me if you want a copy.

1787-01-20 (proved Feb Court 1787) Thomas Hopson of Wake Co NC sold to Christopher Barbee for
L50, a tract on the South side of the North East prong of Now Hope... begin Widow Hopson's corner,
east to Thomas Hopson's line, N down the creek... 100 acres.
Witnesses: William Hopson, Zechariah Hopson
[That widow is probably Richard Hopson's second wife.]

This twentyeth Day of December one thousand and eight hundred and four, I
THOS. HOPSON being sick in body but of good and perfect memory, Declare this last Will and
testament in manner and form following:
I primise first, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife SARAH HOPSON all my Estate during her
natural life or widowhood except my Executors thinks my Estate is wating (wanting?) and at her death or
marriage
first I give unto my son ZACHARIAH HOPSON the tract of land he formerly lived on,
I give unto my son WILLIAM HOPSON my old plantation and running three hundred yards down the
Creek beginning whare the Eighty acres joins my line thence East across my land.
I give unto my son LEWIS HOPSON the balance of my old tract including the plantatin whare on I now
live and one hundre acres out of my four hundred Tract whare on he now lives whare he likes best,
I give unto my Daughter AMY LINN my Lashley tract of land,
I give unto my Daughter SARAH BARBEE two hundred acres of land part of the tract that LEWIS
HOPSON lives on,
the balance of said tract I give unto my daughter DYCEY MOTLEY
and my Stepen Tract I give unto my Daughter POLLY HERNDON
and at my wifes death or marriage I give all my Negroes to be valued in lots and then Divided between
all children namly;
WILLIAM HOPSON, ZACHARIAH HOPSON, LEWIS HOPSON, POLLY HERNDON, AMY LINN, SARAH BARBEE
and half a childs share to DICEY MOTLEY
and half a share to CHRISTOPHER BARBEES four children namely, CHRISTOPHER BARBEE,
MELLEY BARBEE, PATSEY BARBEE, EADY BARBEE
and the balance of my Estate is to be sold and divide as above mentioned
and I appoint my loving son and GOIN BARBEE full and sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament.
In witness whare of I have here unto set my hand the day and date above written.
