This is not the John Welker who married Catherine Hinkel. Those Welkers were from NC and lived in MO.

With Julia he also had a daughter Susan who died young.

Many genealogy sites say this John had a son Jeremiah by his first wife Katie, but I suspect this is wrong.
Jeremiah was clearly born about 1833, and this John's census entries do not show a son that early.
Jeremiah doesn't fit in any of the other Welker families, though, so I can't positively state that he wasn't
John's son.
On the 1850 census Jeremiah is in Westmoreland Co on p64b as an apprentice in the household of
Theodore Stouffer.
