Documents and Records Relating to the Province of New-Hampshire from the Earliest Period of its Settlement
Some merchants and gentlemen of the west of England... about the year 1623... sent... Mr David Thompson, with Mr Edward Hilton and his brother Mr William Hilton, who had been fishmongers in London... furnished with carrying on a plantation there.
Savage, in 1 Winth. Hist., note 116, says, "The name of Edward Hilton, who was a gentleman of good judgment, is often found in our history; and in 1641, when Massachusetts usurped the jurisdiction of the colony of New-Hampshire, he became a magistrate. He was a man of enterprise and influence; possessed the friendship of Governor Winthrop of Mass., and was his confidential correspondent. He may be considered the father of the settlement of New Hampshire; at least of Dover and vicinity. Before 1652, he became an inhabitant of Exeter; where he died, 1671, at a considerably advanced age. See Hist. Coll. N.H., vol. II, p54; also a Biogr sketch of Col. Winthrop Hilton, Hist. Coll . N.H., Vol I , p241.
