Amory Butler married Elizabeth Catlett in 1672. She was formerly Elizabeth
Underwood who first married Capt. Francis Slaughter (d. ca 1656), secondly married
Col John Catlett (before 1/5/1663) (d. 1670) and lastly Amory Butler.
Her will proven 5/7/1673 Rappahannock Co. names son Francis Slaughter, daughter
Sarah (under 17 years)(she later md. Robert Taliaferro), son John Catlett (under 19
years), son William, daughter Elizabeth (who later married Francis Taliaferro). The
will also mentions her deceased husband, John Catlett and names her current
husband, Amory Butler as Executor.

There is supposedly a 1657 deed in Rappahannock Co VA where Elizabeth Slaughter conveys property to her son Francis.
There is supposedly a 1663-01-06 Rappahannock Co VA deed from Mrs Margaret Lucas to her daughter Elizabeth Catlett.

I Elizabeth Butler of the parish of Sittingbourne in the county of Rappa being in sound
and perfect sence and memory doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament...
Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne ffrancis Slaughter all the furniture of my
chamber except a chest of drawers which I give unto my daughter Sarah to bee delivered
to her at her age of seventeen years or day of marriage which shall first happen and a
close stool to my sonne John Catlett to be delivered to him when he goes to housekeeping.
Item I give & bequeath unto my son ffrancis Slaughter all the goods money plate rings and
tobacco mentioned in an account now in the hands of Mr Daniel Gaines and one Negro boy
and an equal share of the sheep pewter brasse and iron & also a great chair and small
couch and one chest and such of the things in my house as my mother gave me by will
the same to bee delivered into his possession when he comes to the age of nineteen years
and that he shall not dispose or sell the same without leave and consent of my executor
and overseers hereafter mentioned till he comes to the age of one & twenty years.
Item I give and bequeath unto my daugther Elizabeth the bed & furniture as it now is standing
in the dining room and the presses and cushion thereon the great looking glasse and the
drawing table and turky carpett and my child bed linning blankets and fine baskett and my
wedding-ring and my biggest diamond ring my gilded bodkin and my necklace with the
biggest pearle and one small bible a silver sucking bottle & my small cabinett.
Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah two of my biggest stone rings a small
pearle neckace and a silver bodkin and my new trunk and the napkin presse one small bible
and small testament & a dram cup my wedding ring & ovall table.
Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne John one small diamond ring the mapp in the
dining room one rapier and one great cutlash one pair of silver buttons and one paire of
silver buckles and the antinomial cupp.
Item I give & bequeath unto my sonne William one small cutlash and a ring with a stone in it
enamelld with blew and a silver seale.
Item I give and bequeath unto my two daughters all my wearing cloathes and wearing linnen.
Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne John and sonne William all the books mentioned
in the inventory equally between them according to their fathers will.
Item I give and bequeath unto my two sonnes John & William Catlett and my two daughters
all my plate except three spoons with their names on them to whom they belong to be
equally divided among them.
Item I give and bequeath all my pewter brass linnen & other household stuffe unto my two
sonnes John & William and my two daughters (except what is before bequeathed to my
sonne ffrancis) with a bed furnished to each of my two sonnes and my daughter Sarah
(except two suites of damask which I give to my two daughters) to bee equally divided
between my two sonnes and two daughters aforesd.
Item I give to each of my three sonnes a carbine.
Item I give and bequeath my gray mare with her increase unto the aforesd fower children of
my deceased husband John Catlett.
Item my will is that my two daughters aforesd shall have delivered to them their former legacies
at their day of marriage or at the years of seventeen and likewise that my two sonnes John
and William have theirs delivered when they come of age.
Item I give and bequeath unto my couzen William Underwood the elder one stoned colt
which came of the sorrell mare.
Item I give and bequeath unto my couzen Humphry Booth the chest with the goods in it
which were my mothers.
Item I give & bequeath unto my couzen Catherine Booth one silver candle cupp which was her
grandmothers and in case she dyes unto hir bro Humphrey.
Item my will is that if my son ffrancis dye before he comes to age that my children surviving
enjoy the whole estate both formerly and now bequeathed unto him.
Item my will is that if my executor hereafter mentioned shall brake up housekeeping that then
all my household stuff aforesd bequeathed to my children shall be well packed and locked up
& kept from use and that the linnen and other things that are in the cask & trunck be forthwith
locked up till the time of their delivery and that all my sonne ffrancis his household stuff to be
likewise reserved and kept by it self.
Item I give & bequeath to my sister Peirce a mourning ring of twenty shillings price in England.
Item that if my executor hereafter mentioned shall voluntarily surrender up the estate that
then Mr Daniel Gaines if he hath the children shall have the estate provided that he give
good security to keep the sd estate entire and deliver the same in kind according to my will
and that this my will bee by him in all respects performed as my executor is bound to doe.
Item my will is that my executor supply what tobaccoe shall be required for my childrens
education now in England according to my husbands will and likewise that he make
sufficient provision when they shall come from schoole for their accomodation and their
bringing of them home to Virginia.
Item my will is that all my wearing cloathes which last yeare I sent for as the profitt of my
tobaccoe bee upon the arrival of the same locked up in my cask kept for & devided
between my two daughters and the rest my executor to have for his household use. And
likewise what moneys shall remaine in Mr Geffries and Mr Mansards hands in London be
disbursed by them for a bed & furniture for my son ffrancis in leiu of one his father in law
did owe him and two small silver tankards (if it so holds out) to be added to the rest of
the plate for the children of my deceased husband.
Item my will is that the childrens estate be kept entire and not parted before their legacies
given by me become due unto them and if the court shall take my childrens estate out of
my executors hands that then my children shall altogether bee maintained well educated &
provided for by and with the profitt of their own estate and that my thirds and the profitts
thereof shall remain in my executors hands till they come of age.
Item I do constitute and appoint my beloved husband Amory Butler sole executor of this
my last will and testament and guardian to my children and my cousen Captain Thomas
Hawkins my Bro Edward Rowsee and Mr Dainel Gaines o[ver]seers of this my last will &
testament provided [tha]t if my sd executor do not educate & keep th[e]m well that then
Mr Daniel Gaines shall have the guardianship of my children my sd executor allowing him a
sufficient maintenance for their well being and education according as my overseers and
executor shall agree and if they do not what the court shall determine for the same and
if Mr Gaines shall dye my desire is that my cousen Hawkins do take the children upon the
same terms and if my executor shall imbezill the estate or forsake the country then my will
is that my overseers shall call him to account and finding him delinquent my executor shall
be either bound to make good the same out of his own estate or else yield it up to Mr
Daniel Gaines the sd Gaines doing as before for the security of the estate.
Item that my sd executor doe purchase as soon as he can a negro man for my sonne
ffrancis by or with the profit of the estate in lieu of one his father in law deceased did owe him.
Item I give and bequeath of the cattle that were my mothers and now in the keeping of
Thomas Kirk two of the female to my sister Peirce his children with their increase forever
and also the other two of the female kind with their increase and eight steers to my
Bro Booths children, the sd steers and increase of the female to be disposed of by my
executor to purchase for them a [Neg]ro woman and the same to bee delivered to th[em]
with hir increase when they come of age mo[rt]ality excepted.
Item my will is that if the estate of my children shall bee taken out of my executors hands
within halfe a year after my decease and if my executor by compelled to make good of the sd
estate what shall be falling short my executor shall make good the same out of the increase
of the Negroes that have bin since the same have bin committed to him the sd increase to
bee delivered to my children in kind when they come of age, and if it shall not suffice then
the same to bee made good out my thirds or the profitts thereof as my executor shall think
best for my children.
Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved husband Amory Butler a bed & furniture with a
mourning ring of twenty two shillings price in England.
Item when my executor shall have paid all my legacies that then if there be remaining any of
my thirds in his hands he shall surrender up the same unto my children the profitts thereof
excepted.

There was a suit over the above. The court adjudged that Amory Butler have charge of the estate and Daniel Gaines of the children.
