Notes:

died 1743-01-03, Middlesex County, Virginia, leaving a will written 1742-01-02, which was signed Henry Tugle. His descendants have since been known by the name Tuggle. He was a man of substance and active in the affairs of the parish and the County.

He married (1) August 26, 1692, Mary Baskett, daughter of John and Elizabeth Baskett. Her death date is unknown. He married (2) on October 31, 1710, Elizabeth Baldwin Browne, a widow with two children, daughter of William and Margaret (Cook) Baldwin.

I Henry Tugle of the Parish of Christ Church in the County of Middlesex
being in perfect sense and memory do constitute and appoint
this present writing to be my last will and testament...
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my grandaughter Sarah Baldwin,
daughter of William and Judith Baldwin, one cow and
calf to be paid her at the age of seventeen by my executors
hereafter mentioned.
Item I give and bequeath unto my
three gransons (to wit) John Tuggle, Henry Tuggle, and
James Tuggle sons of my son Henry Tuggle deceased to each
one shilling sterling and no more.
Item I give & bequeath
unto my granson William Mansfield one shilling sterling
and no more.
Item the rest and residue of my estate all
& singluar both real and personal I lend unto my loving
wife Elizabeth Tuggle during her natural life or widowhood
and at her death or marriage I give the same as followeth
Item I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Tugle one
certain tract or parcil of land whereon he now lives,
being the land which my father purchased of Richard
Lewis containing by estimation one hundred acres be the
same more or less. I give the same unto the said Joseph
Tuggle to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and
bequeath unto my son Thomas Tugle all the land and
plantation whereon I now dwell being granted by Patent
to my father containing by estimation one hundred & ten
acres be the same more or less. I give the same unto the sd
Thomas Tuggle to him and his heirs for ever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Tugle my brandy
still with its cap and worm.
Item I give & bequeath
unto my daughter Rachel Chowning one Negro girl
named Jude I give the said girl and her increase unto
the said Rachel and her heirs for ever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann Tugle one Negro girl
named Nan I give the said girl & her increase to the sd
Ann Tugle and her heirs for ever.
Item I give and bequeath
unto my son Benjamin Tugle to him & his heirs for ever
one Negro boy named Jack.
Item I give & bequeath also unto my son Benjamin Tugle my gun.
Item I give & bequeath unto my son William Tugle one Negro boy named
Peter to him & his heirs for ever.
Item I give and bequeath
also unto my son William Tugle my pistols & holsters.
Item my will and desire is that the rest and residue of my Negros
not heretofore given be equally divided amongst all my
children that are now alive.
Item my will and desire also
is that the rest of my personal and movable estate not
heretofore given be equally divided amongst my own
children James Brown & Elizabeth Wood children of my
present wife by her former husband that is my desire is
that the said James Brown and Elizabeth Wood have an
equal part of my personal and movable estate with my own
children. Provided nevertheless that nothing herein shall
be construed to bar my loving wife from a childs part of all
my estate both real and personal (the particular legacies
excepted) after her marriage that my will and desire is that
in case my wife Elizabeth Tugle should marry that then
she have a childs part of of all my estate both real &
personal (the aforesaid legacies excepted) and no more.
Item my will and desire is that my son William Tugle
be at full age to act for himself at my death as though
he were twentyone years old.
Item my will and desire is that my estate may not be brought to an
appraisement.
Item my will and desire is & I humbly
beg the favour that Captain Henry Thacker & Captain
Thomas Price divide my estate as it is before drected.
And I do hereby ordain constitute & appoint my loving
wife Elizabeth Tugle and my beloved son Thomas
Tuggle executors of this my last will and testament,
written partly on both sides of this sheet of paper.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed
my seal this second day of January in the year of our
lord one thousand seven hundred and fortytwo.

this will was proved by the oaths of John Stamper and
John Lewis Junr two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to
