One day a strange woman, with a male child about 18 months old, came to their house
and said, as they had daughters and no son, she wished to give them her child, she
would not reveal her own name or that of the child's father. After some persuasion, and
a promise never to come to see the child, they agreed to take it and bring it up as their
own, which they did, and the mother never returned.
The child received all the care and affection of a son, and was known as Jim Hart.
