Children of James Howard and Sarah (unknown):
*Mary Howard b. 1794-00-00
John Howard b. 1800-09-15
Abraham Howard b. 1813-11-03

Notes:

He was born between 1760 and 1770.

He was still in Overton Co in 1833. The Overton Co TN GenWeb site has a list of 1833 locator records,
and James is on page 71.

--
Was he married before 1790? There are 5 James Howards in NC on the 1790 census, in Chatham (203), Edgecomb (112), Fayette (132), New Hanover (217), and Sampson Cos (336). Only Edgecomb and Fayette could be him.

Unfortunately, the Overton Co courthouse burned in 1865, so probably James' will did not survive.

--
Genforum message 4171 says that "History of Overton Co TN" by Overton Co History Book Committee has information on the Howards.

--
1830 census Overton Co TN p201
James Howard 1 M <5, 2 M 15-20, 1 M 20-30, 1 M 60-70, 1 F 5-10, 1 F 15-20

The 5 youngest can't be his, and can't be from the M 20-30 unless he is mis-marked and really 30-36.
Again his is the only Howard family in the county.

1820 census Overton Co TN p256
James Howard 2 M 10-16, 2 M 16-26, 1 M 45+, 2 F 16-26

Joseph Duncan, who married his daughter Mary, is three lines away.
Between them are James Nealy and Benjamin Workman.

Is this him?
1800 census Surry Co NC p659
James Howard 2 M <10, 1 M 10-16, 1 M 26-45, 1 F <10, 1 F 26-45, 6 slaves
[John <1, x, x, James 31, Mary 6, Sarah 30]

John and Mary are supposed to have been born in TN.
But also in the county are John Allen (second husband of Abraham's widow Jane), and Lakey and Fleming families.
