Notes:

[R05.5.7]

married in Walla Walla Co WA
He and Nancy, and daughter Martha, are buried in Rigsby cemetery, Garfield Co WA.

Some web sites have his middle name as Walter, but I think that is wrong.. His next younger brother is named Walter. Note, though, that his son is James Walter. I suspect someone mixed up the two Jameses.

They also had a daughter Martha Luella 1880-11-03 d 1882-02-19.

He moved to California in 1852.
First he worked in the mines near Hangtown (now Placerville), and then moved to the northern part of the state, ending in Yreka in late 1854.
In early 1856 he and his brother Walter began merchandising on Beaver creek, but apparently that wasn't too successful.
In the middle of that year they moved to Jackson Co OR, where they mined and ranched for a couple of years.
In 1858 James went to work in the Carriboo mines in British Columbia.
In early 1864 he went to Idaho and stayed in Elk City for the summer. He spent the winter in Walla Walla WA, then moved to Blackfoot country in early 1865.
In late 1865 he came to Pataha Creek in Garfield Co and took a ranch next to brother Walter.
He sold this ranch in 1867 and bought another in Pataha Co from Robert Montgomery.
About 1869 he sold this second ranch and moved to Whitman Co.
In 1874 he again moved, to a ranch four miles from Pataha City.
