Sir

I have the honor to lay
before you for action the following comp-
laint of Mary Edwards (colored)

On Friday and Saturday of
last week she states (and bears on her
body marks to prove her truth) that she
was severely beaten by Asa Rigsby,
Vernon Rigsby, John Parlenton(?) & David Munn
citizens of Chatham County. These parties
as she says are not owners of the place where
she lives and beat her because by order of
her former master she forbade them taking
the peaches and plundering the place generally.
On Saturday her employer & former master Mr Edwards
was present & remonstrated againt their abuse of her
but they paid no heed to him. They also said that
they asked no odds(?) of the Law(?) ___ and if they
interfered they would serve them the
same way. This is not the first case of
the kind which has been reported to
me and I would respectfully request
that these men may be arrested and
brought to this place to answer to the
charges. Mr Edwards & Atlas Rigsby the white <==
witness.
