It looks like Nancy married Archibald right before the rest of her family moved to Arkansas. Since her first 3 children are born in Tennessee, it looks like she did not move in 1831 with them. However, her later children are born in Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky, so apparently the Evans family did move out later.

Was the second Mary really their daughter? Or was she adopted?

To me it's pretty suspicious that Archibald and Nancy had a daughter Mary in 1837, as shown on the 1850 census, and another daughter Mary in 1859, as shown on the 1860 census. (The younger Mary's 1900 census entry says she was born in 1856.)

The older Mary seems to have lived to adulthood, so both of them would have been alive at the same time. That's unlikely.

Nancy would have been 48 or 45 when the younger Mary was born. That's not impossible, but certainly a point of doubt.

Archibald and Nancy's 1860 census entry also contains a James age 4. Some people have assumed he was their son. Again that's unlikely, because they had a son James in 1830 who lived until 1911. Archibald's 1870 entry shows him as James Rackley, so apparently he was not their son, just raised by them.

Archibald's 1870 entry also contains a Mary Hoffer (I think it says) age 7, listed right before James Rackley. Apparently Archibald also took in this Mary.

[Note: Archibald's 1870 entry starts at the bottom of one page and ends at the top of another. However, the stamped sheet numbers do not line up with the written page numbers, and in Ancestry.com's collection at least the two images are not next to each other. Archibald is on image 19, and the rest of the family is on image 24. Archibald's age is also way off, given as 48 instead of 60. You can tell it's him, though, because of the children living with him.]

Mary 1859 is listed after James on the 1860 census. Since Archibald and Nancy seem to have taken in at least two children, there is a distinct possibility that she was another one.

Mary 1859 appears on the 1900 census with her children by Jeff Horton. One of them, Cynthia, appears on the 1910 census living with Susan Kirk and is identified as Susan's niece. Susan is Susan Evans, daughter of Archibald, which implies Mary 1859 is Susan's sister. But if Mary was adopted by Archibald at a very young age, Susan could well have thought of her as her sister.

This question could be resolved by comparing maternal DNA of a female-to-female descendant of Mary 1859 with that of a female-to-female descendant of one of Nancy's other daughters. If you are such a descendant, please contact me at the link below.
