Notes:

We found a note (apparently written by Della McCaskey) that says her grandparents were Sarah Mallone and John Tompkins. It says that John was born in 1818 and Sarah was born in 1834 (or maybe 1838; that paragraph is hard to decipher).

married Ruth in Schuyler Co MO
probably married Sarah in Douglas Co MO

--
Ancestry.com's database of Civil War Service Records shows:
Private George W Tompkins 10 MO infantry Co A
Private George W Tompkins 27 MO mounted infantry Co E

Could one or both of those be my George?
The 10th infantry was recruited from Schuyler Co, so that George is probably not mine.
The 27th mounted infantry was recruited from MO at large.

Journal of Historical & Genealogical Society of Douglas Co MO, 1986 May

George W Tompkins was an early pioneer and homesteaded in the immediate area of Ava on 1853-09-19.
According to an interview in the Historical Records Survey of Missouri, the first post office in what is
now Douglas Co was known as California Barrens. It was established in 1855 with George Tompkins
as the postmaster.
The postal archives do not associate his name with California Barrens, however, but with Cow Skin.
He was the third postmaster, appointed 1856-04-04.

--
He was a Judge of the County Court in Douglas Co MO starting in 1860.
