Thomas had dark hair and brown eyes, and was of Irish ancestry. He made his living as a school teacher. He was in the Union Army, and worked his way up to become a major. He was discharged because of his age shortly before the Civil War broke out. Thomas' brother was a slave owner, but Thomas didn't want to have anything to do with slavery.

He was Superintendant of Public Schools in Douglas Co MO from 1866 to 1868.

"The family came west in a wagon train. Thomas broke his leg. The wagon train continued on,
leaving him behind until he mended -- a chancy act as Matilda was pregnant. Family biography
calls him a major in the Civil War; however, records at Jefferson City indicate he was a private."
